If you’re planning a trip to Bocas del Toro, one thing you definitely won’t struggle with is finding somewhere good to eat. From fresh seafood and local Caribbean flavours to laid-back beach bars and affordable eats, there’s a great mix of food across the islands.

During our time in Bocas del Toro, we made it our mission to try as many places as possible, and honestly, we were surprised by how good the food scene is for such a small destination.

This guide covers the best restaurants in Bocas del Toro that we personally visited, including a mix of budget-friendly spots, local favourites and places perfect for sunset drinks.

Best Restaurants in Bocas del Toro

1. Octo Caribbean Grill

  • Price: $$–$$$
  • Best for: Seafood, date night, something a bit nicer

Octo was one of the more “upscale” places we visited in Bocas, and it definitely felt like a step up from some of the more casual spots.

If you’re after a slightly more refined dinner or fresh seafood, this is a great option.

2. La Buga

  • Best for: Dinner, lively atmosphere

La Buga was hands down our absolutely favourite hangout in Bocas del Toro! However, it’s not just a restaurant. It’s more like a complete food fiesta with heaps of different vendors from all over the world on the menu.

The setting has to be the icing on the cake with heaps of tables both inside and outside and even swings right above the water! 

3. El Ultimo Refugio

  • Price: $$–$$$
  • Best for: Waterfront dining, date night

One of the more well-known restaurants in Bocas, and for good reason. Sitting right on the water, Ultimo Refugio it’s a great spot for dinner with a view and a slightly more “special” meal.

4. Klika (Formally called Selina)

  • Price: $$
  • Best for: Social vibe, cocktails, sunset drinks

Previously known as Selina, Klika is a great spot if you’re looking for a more social atmosphere. It’s a popular place to grab food and drinks, especially in the evening, and a good place to meet other travellers.

4. Raw Fusion

  • Price: $$
  • Best for: Sushi, something different

Raw is a great option when you want a break from Caribbean food. The sushi was surprisingly good and definitely worth trying.

5. Om Cafe

  • Price: $$
  • Best for: Vegetarian food, healthy options

A great option if you’re after something a bit lighter or plant-based is Om Cafe. Relaxed vibe and good variety.

6. Leaf Eaters Cafe

  • Price: $$
  • Best for: Vegan food, healthy eats

If you’re vegan or just want something fresh and healthy, this is a great spot. Plenty of plant-based options and a nice chilled atmosphere.

From 11:30am until 4pm, Saturday to Wednesday, make sure to pencil in a visit to Leaf Eaters Cafe on your schedule. Tacos, sandwiches, veggie burgers, salads – they’ve got a spread that caters to all tastes. 

7. The Firefly 

  • Price: $$–$$$
  • Best for: Unique setting, sunset

The Firefly is a bit more of a unique experience and a great option if you’re looking for something slightly different. Perfect for a relaxed evening.

I must admit that whilst traveling and backpacking across Panama, The Firefly was a bit beyond our budget, so unfortunately, we missed out on the experience. Nonetheless, it’d be a crime not to mention this gem while compiling the finest eateries in Bocas del Toro.

8. El Patio Bocas

  • Best for: Casual dining, tacos, central location

A solid all-rounder in a convenient location. Good menu options and an easy choice if you’re not sure where to go.

If you’re on the hunt for a truly Instagram-worthy dining spot in the heart of Bocas del Toro, let me introduce you to El Patio. This place had us hooked so much so we visited not once, but twice!

9. The Blue Coconut

  • Price: $$–$$$
  • Best for: Beachfront dining, day trip

One of the more scenic places to eat, especially if you’re heading out on a day trip. Great views and a really nice setting by the water.

Accessible solely by boat from Bocas Town, the skilled drivers will know exactly where you are on about and locating a water taxi is a breeze. Opening its doors from noon until 6pm daily, this spot is an oasis you won’t want to miss.

10. Cafe Del Mar  

  • Price: $$
  • Best for: Omelettes and coffee

Get your camera ready, because Cafe Del Mar is another one of those Instagram-worthy wonders in Bocas del Toro that you won’t want to miss! This café-restaurant is a true gem, serving up dishes that are nothing short of incredible.

Now, brace yourself for a tiny space with only a handful of tables. Patience might be your best friend as you wait for a spot, but let me tell you, it’s worth it!

11. Bibis on the beach

  • Price: $$
  • Best for: Seafood, overwater dining

Located over the water, Bibi’s is known for its seafood and setting. This treasure recently clinched the top spot as the finest eatery on Isla Carenero, and boy, does it live up to the hype.

With doors wide open from 8am to 9pm daily, you’re in for a day of pure bliss. Just a word of advice, don’t pull a me and forget the sunscreen from your Costa Rica and Panama packing list!

12. Palmar Bocas

  • Price: $$
  • Best for: Beach vibes, relaxed meal

If your Bocas del Toro adventure leads you to Isla Bastimentos, then Palmar is your golden ticket! We had a short and sweet stay on this island, staying at Palmar Lodge, and let me tell you, it was a love affair!

Oh, and here’s a little magic touch: while we can’t promise it for your visit, during our stay, a sloth decided to take up residence in a tree above the restaurant. I kid you not, we were treated to a sloth-show every single evening!
