What to Pack for Cambodia: The Ultimate Packing List for Every Traveller

Planning your trip and wondering exactly what to pack for Cambodia? Whether you’re heading to the temples of Angkor Wat, the beaches of Koh Rong, or exploring cities like Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, packing smart can make or break your trip.

Cambodia is an incredible country to travel through, but the climate, culture, and activities mean you’ll need a thoughtful packing list.

After spending time backpacking across Southeast Asia, we’ve put together this complete Cambodia packing list to help you feel prepared, comfortable, and ready for anything.

Cambodia Packing List: What You Really Need

Before we dive into the full list of items, here’s the first thing you should know: pack light!

You’ll be moving around a lot on buses, boats, and tuk-tuks, so a heavy bag will quickly become frustrating. A smaller backpack or suitcase will make your travel days much easier.

If you’re planning to backpack in Cambodia (or continue to Vietnam or Thailand), this becomes even more important.

What to Think About When Packing for Cambodia

Before you even start your packing list, there are a few important factors to consider that will influence what you actually need.

Time of Year (Dry vs Rainy Season)

Cambodia has two main seasons:

  • Dry season (November–April): Hot, sunny, and perfect for travel
  • Rainy season (May–October): Heavy but short bursts of rain, high humidity

If you’re visiting during the rainy season, pack:

Even during the dry season, it can still rain occasionally, so a small waterproof layer is always a good idea.

Your Travel Style

Are you backpacking Cambodia, staying in hostels, or visiting higher-end resorts?

  • Backpackers: Pack light, quick-dry, and versatile items in an easy-to-carry backpack.
  • Mid-range/luxury: You can bring a few extra outfits and will get away with taking roll-on luggage.
  • Island travel (Koh Rong): Focus on beachwear and minimal clothing

Activities You Have Planned

Think about what you’ll actually be doing:

  • Visiting temples like Angkor Wat → modest clothing
  • Exploring cities like Phnom Penh → light, breathable outfits
  • Beach time in Koh Rong → swimwear and sandals

Planning ahead saves you from overpacking unnecessary items.

Lightweight & Breathable Clothing

  • Light dresses or skirts
  • A couple of pairs of shorts
  • One pair of long trousers or a maxi skirt

When it comes to clothing, thin and light fabrics are your best friend.

What to Wear When Visiting Temples

If you’re visiting temples like Angkor Wat, you’ll need to dress respectfully, which means knees and shoulders covered. A scarf is a great multi-use item to keep in your day bag.

  • 1 pair of sandals or flip-flops. We noticed Tevas, Birkenstocks and Crocs were all popular choices.

Trust us, good footwear is one of the most important items you’ll pack.
