Where to Stay in Paris: Best Areas + Hotels for Every Budget
Choosing where to stay in Paris honestly makes a HUGE difference to your trip.
Paris is massive, and every neighbourhood has a completely different vibe. Some areas are perfect for first-time visitors wanting to walk everywhere, while others feel quieter, more local, or better for nightlife and food.
When we most recently spent 3 days in Paris, one of the best decisions we made was staying somewhere central enough that we could walk to lots of attractions instead of spending all day on the metro.
After spending three days exploring different parts of the city, these are the areas we’d personally recommend depending on your budget and travel style.

The Districts in Paris Explained
Paris is divided into 20 arrondissements (districts) arranged in a spiral shape around the city.
Honestly, this confused us SO much before visiting.
The lower-numbered arrondissements are generally the most central and best for tourists.
If it’s your first time visiting Paris, we’d highly recommend staying somewhere central rather than trying to save money by staying far outside the city. Paris is extremely walkable, and staying centrally completely changes the experience.
Some of our favourite memories came from randomly walking between neighbourhoods at night rather than constantly getting metros everywhere.
Best Areas to Stay in Paris
1st Arrondissement – Best Area for First-Time Visitors

If it’s your first time in Paris, this is probably the easiest and most convenient area to stay in.
The 1st arrondissement is right in the heart of the city and puts you within walking distance of the Louvre Museum, the Palais Royal, the Seine River and major metro stations.
It’s one of the most central locations possible. The biggest advantage of staying here is convenience as you can walk almost everywhere.
The downside? Hotels here can definitely be expensive. But if your budget allows it, staying centrally saves loads of time and energy.

Le Marais ended up being one of our favourite areas in Paris.
This neighbourhood feels trendy, stylish, and much more local compared to areas around the Eiffel Tower.
We spent ages wandering through boutiques, cafés, vintage shops, bakeries and side streets.
This is also where shops like Merci are located. If you enjoy shopping, cafés, wine bars, and cool neighbourhood vibes, you’ll probably love Le Marais.
It’s also one of the best areas in Paris for food. The location is great too because you’re still close to major attractions without feeling stuck in the busiest tourist areas.

If you’re travelling to Paris on more of a budget, the Latin Quarter is one of the best areas to stay.
This area feels younger, more relaxed, and less polished than some of the luxury districts.
There are loads of cafés, bars, bookshops, cheaper restaurants and student hangouts. It’s also still extremely central.
Honestly, this is probably where we’d stay next time.

Saint Germain des Prés – Best Area for Classic Paris Vibes

If you imagine Paris as cafés on every corner with elegant streets, boutique hotels and wine bars then Saint Germain des Prés is probably exactly what you’re looking for.

You’ll also find famous cafés like Deux Magots here.
This area is definitely more expensive, but it feels very “classic Paris.”

The 7th arrondissement is home to the Eiffel Tower, Champ de Mars, beautiful streets and luxury apartments.
This is the area we stayed in and it honestly feels calmer and more residential than many central tourist districts.
Hotels here are also expensive but for iconic Paris views, it’s hard to beat.

Montmartre was probably our favourite neighbourhood in Paris overall. It feels artistic, creative, and completely different from the rest of the city.
You’ll find street artists, hidden staircases, cafés and amazing viewpoints
The downside is that Montmartre is hillier and slightly less central. You’ll definitely walk a LOT here.
But if atmosphere matters more to you than being beside every attraction, this area is amazing.
Best For
- photographers
- couples
- atmosphere
- cafés
- nightlife
Downsides
- lots of stairs
- less central
- tourist crowds around Sacré Coeur

Where NOT to Stay in Paris
Honestly, the biggest mistake first-time visitors make is booking somewhere too far outside the city to save money.
Yes, hotels are cheaper further out.
But spending over an hour travelling, constantly using the metro and travelling back late at night quickly becomes exhausting.
We’d highly recommend avoiding staying too far outside central Paris unless you’re travelling Europe on a budget.
Try to stay somewhere with good metro connections at a minimum.
Hotel vs Airbnb in Paris
When we visited Paris, we stayed in an Airbnb.
It worked well for us because we wanted more space and the option to cook occasionally (not that we did).
But honestly, hotels in Paris can sometimes be easier for shorter trips because:
- luggage storage
- reception desks
- easier check-in
- daily cleaning
- central locations
If you’re only visiting Paris for a few days, a hotel is often more convenient overall.
Best Area to Stay in Paris for Nightlife
Paris is one of Europe’s best party destinations, and if nightlife is important to you, we’d recommend Le Marais, the Latin Quarter and Montmartre.
Best Area to Stay in Paris for Families
For families, the best areas are usually:
- 7th arrondissement
- Saint Germain des Prés
- 1st arrondissement
These areas feel a bit safer, quieter, walkable and are close to attractions.

Final Thoughts on Where to Stay in Paris
Choosing where to stay in Paris honestly shapes your entire trip.
Paris is a city where wandering around neighbourhoods becomes part of the experience, so staying somewhere with good atmosphere makes a huge difference.
But overall, staying central is definitely worth it if your budget allows.
One of the best parts of Paris is being able to walk outside your hotel at night and immediately feel surrounded by cafés, beautiful streets, and the atmosphere of the city.
That’s something you miss slightly if you stay too far outside the centre.
If we visited again, we’d probably stay in Le Marais or the Latin Quarter because they felt the most balanced overall.
