What is Pai Canyon? (And Why It’s Worth Visiting)
Pai Canyon, known locally as Kong Lan, is a natural geological formation shaped over millions of years by wind and water erosion. The result? A maze of narrow, winding trails, steep ridges, and deep valleys that feel both thrilling and slightly intimidating.
Just 8km from Pai town, this unique place is a must-visit for anyone looking for a bit of adventure in northern Thailand. As you walk along the ridges, you’ll be rewarded with sweeping views over lush valleys, distant mountains, and even rice fields depending on the season.
Whether you’re into hiking, photography, or simply soaking in nature, Pai Canyon delivers an experience that feels raw and untouched.

How to Get to Pai Canyon
Before you can explore Pai Canyon, you’ll need to get to Pai itself.
Most travellers head to Pai from Chiang Mai, either by bus or scooter. The famous road (Highway 1095) is known for its 700+ bends and is considered one of the most scenic drives in Thailand, though definitely not for the faint-hearted.
If you’re not keen on driving, buses run regularly and are easy to book.
For a full breakdown of transport options, we have a full guide on how to get around Thailand, which may help you out.
Getting from Pai Town to Pai Canyon
Once in Pai, getting to Pai Canyon is straightforward:
- Scooter (most popular option): Rent one in Pai for around 150 baht per day
- Car rental: Ideal for groups or if you’re not comfortable on a bike
- Tour: Great if you want to combine multiple Pai attractions in one day
The canyon has a small parking area right at the entrance, making it easy to access no matter how you travel.
Pai Canyon Thailand Map & Location
Pai Canyon is located approximately 8km south of Pai town, making it a quick 15-minute drive.
If you’re using Google Maps, simply search “Pai Canyon” or “Kong Lan Viewpoint” and it will take you straight to the main entrance and parking area.
Best Time to Visit Pai Canyon
Best Time of Year
The best time to visit Pai Canyon is between November and February, when the weather is cooler and the skies are clearer.
Avoid visiting during the burning season (typically February to April), when air quality drops and visibility across northern Thailand can be poor due to agricultural burning. You can read more about this in our dos and don’ts of visiting Thailand guide.
Best Time of Day (Don’t Miss Sunset!)
The absolute best time to visit Pai Canyon is for sunset.
As the sun dips behind the mountains, the entire canyon glows in warm golden tones, creating one of the most magical views in Pai. It’s easily one of the top sunset spots in all of Thailand.
Alternatively, early morning is a great option if you want to avoid crowds and heat.
Pai Canyon Hike: What to Expect
The Pai Canyon hike can be as easy or as adventurous as you make it.
- First viewpoint: Just a 3-minute walk from the entrance
- Main trails: 1–2 hours, depending on how far you explore
The trails vary from wide and manageable to extremely narrow ridges with steep drop-offs on either side. Some sections require careful footing and a bit of confidence, especially if you’re afraid of heights.
That said, the freedom to explore at your own pace is part of what makes this such a fun adventure.
Is Pai Canyon Safe?
Yes, but with caution!
While most of the canyon is accessible, some sections are undeniably steep and exposed. During our visit, we actually saw a tourist slip, which quickly brought emergency services to the scene, a reminder that this isn’t a place to take lightly.
Safety tips:
- Wear proper shoes (no flip-flops)
- Take your time on narrow paths
- Avoid risky sections if you’re unsure
- Stay hydrated (it gets hot!)
Travel insurance is always a smart idea when exploring places like this.
Can You Book a Pai Canyon Tour?
Yes, and it’s a great option if you want to see more of Pai in one day.
We personally booked a full-day trip around Pai and were taken to several highlights before finishing at Pai Canyon for sunset.
Stops included:
- White Buddha (Wat Phra That Mae Yen)
- Santichon Chinese village
- Kho Kuu So Bamboo Bridge
- Pam Bok Waterfall
It’s a relaxed way to explore without worrying about transport, and a great introduction to Pai if you’re short on time.
If you’re staying in Chiang Mai, you can also book day trips to Pai, though we’d recommend staying overnight if possible.

Entrance Fee & Facilities
Cost
Pai Canyon is completely free to enter, making it one of the best budget-friendly experiences in Thailand.
Facilities
At the entrance and parking area, you’ll find:
- Free toilets
- Small snack stalls
- Drinks and basic refreshments
There aren’t any facilities along the trails, so come prepared!

What Else to Do in Pai
Pai might be a small town, but it’s packed with things to do!
From chilled cafés and scenic viewpoints to waterfalls and hot springs, there’s no shortage of experiences. And of course, you can’t visit Pai without experiencing its famous nightlife.
One activity you absolutely shouldn’t miss is Tipsy Tubing in Pai. This was by far one of our favourite activities in the whole of Thailand! It’s chaotic, social, and a lot of fun.

Do you need to rent a motorbike to visit Pai and the canyon?
No not at all. You don’t need to rent a scooter at all during your visit to Pai and still see everything it has to offer. The best way to do this is by taking tours where you can see all of the highlights without having to worry about falling off.
That being said, if you have the confidence to rent a scooter, it really is worth it and the freedom is amazing. You can also see everything at your own pace on a far smaller budget.
12. Is Pai Canyon worth the visit?
Without a doubt yes!
As you’ve probably realised from this and all of our other articles, Pai was one of our highlights in Thailand. It’s even become one of the go-to destinations for tourists visiting Thailand.

Oh how I love Thailand! It’s my favorite country thus far, and I’ve been dreaming of going back ever since I visited in 2019. Pai Canyon sounds like a fun area to explore, and I love learning the history behind these natural formations; Pai Canyon’s history and formation actually reminds me a lot of Arches National Park in Utah in the US! Very cool. Sounds like I will need to go back soon :). Xx Sara
Wow, I didn’t know that at all; thanks for sharing Sara. Crazy to think you visited so long ago, i’m sure it hasn’t changed much.

We were sad we did not make it to northern Thailand when we visited. We would certainly have wanted to hike and see the Pai Canyon. Good thing that walking on such a narrow, high route would not freak us out. A tour sounds like the perfect way to get the best experience.
I’m sorry you didn’t get to visit Pai, i’m sure you’d have loved it as much as we did! Glad you enjoyed our post Linda!
