It can be, but it doesn’t have to be. There are plenty of affordable accommodation options in La Fortuna!
If you want convenience, stay in town. If you want a unique experience with volcano views and hot springs, stay near the volcano.
We’d recommend 2–4 days to properly enjoy the area. We stayed for 2 nights and didn’t feel like we left too soon.
This gives you enough time to visit Fortuna Waterfall, Arenal Volcano National Park, Hot Springs and tours.
Not essential, but it helps. We didn’t have our own vehicle during our time in Costa Rica and got away with just booking tours and taxis.
