We’ll be honest, Genoa wasn’t originally high on our list. Like most people travelling through Italy, we were focused on places like Florence, Rome, and Venice. But after stopping here for a couple of days, it completely surprised us!
With its maze-like streets, authentic local vibe, incredible food (hello pesto!), and beautiful harbour views, Genoa really does feel like a hidden gem.

Here’s how we’d recommend spending your 1 day Genoa itinerary:

- Evening → Food, drinks, and soaking up the atmosphere
Morning: Getting Lost in Genoa’s City Centre
The best way to start your Genoa itinerary? Just walk.
Genoa’s city centre is one of those places where Google Maps almost becomes useless (in a good way). The narrow alleyways, known as caruggi, twist and turn endlessly, and honestly, getting lost here was one of our favourite parts.
We grabbed a coffee, wandered aimlessly, and just soaked it all in. It felt far less touristy than other Italian cities, and you really get a sense of local life.
San Lorenzo Cathedral (Must-See in Genoa)
One of the main Genoa highlights is the Cathedral of San Lorenzo. It has a black and white striped exterior, a beautiful interior and is right in the heart of the city.
It’s definitely a must-see when visiting Genoa, and it doesn’t take long to explore.
Christopher Columbus’ House
Just a short walk away, you’ll find the house believed to be the birthplace of Christopher Columbus.
It’s a quick stop, but a cool one, especially if you’re into history!
Late Morning: Genoa Aquarium & Harbour
Next up, head towards the port and harbour; this is one of the most modern parts of the city.
Aquarium of Genoa
We weren’t sure whether to visit Genoa aquarium at first, but we’re really glad we did.
- One of the largest aquariums in Europe
- Great variety of marine life
- Perfect if you’re travelling as a couple or family
It’s definitely one of the top things to do in Genoa in one day, especially if you want a break from walking.
Old Port (Porto Antico)
After the aquarium, spend some time walking around the harbour.
This area has:
- Restaurants and cafés
- Views of the boats and cruise ships
- A more modern, relaxed vibe
If you’re arriving on a Genoa cruise itinerary, this is likely where you’ll start your day.
Lunch: Eat Your Body Weight in Pesto
You can’t visit Genoa without trying pesto—it literally originated here.
We stopped for lunch at a small local restaurant and ordered:
- Fresh pasta with pesto
- Focaccia
- A glass of wine
And honestly… it was one of the best meals we had in Italy. If you’re into food, this city is seriously underrated.
Afternoon: The Viewpoint Hike (Our Favourite Part)
After lunch, we decided to do something a bit more active, and this ended up being the highlight of our day.
We made our way up to one of the viewpoints overlooking the city. You can either walk up (what we did), or take a funicular.
The walk is a bit steep, but nothing too crazy, and the views at the top are 100% worth it.

From the top, you get panoramic views of the harbour, the colourful buildings and the coastline stretching out.
We stayed up there for ages just taking it all in. It’s one of those spots that makes you realise how underrated Genoa really is.
Late Afternoon: Shopping & Wandering
After heading back down, we spent some time exploring more of the city and doing a bit of shopping.
Genoa has a mix of high street stores, local boutiques and small markets. Again, it’s not overly touristy, which makes it feel more authentic.
Evening: Food, Drinks & Local Life
To finish your one day in Genoa Italy, head out for dinner and drinks.
The vibe in the evening is very local with a relaxed and social vibe, similar to the rest of Italy. We found a small restaurant, ordered more pasta (obviously), and just enjoyed the atmosphere.
Day Trips from Genoa (If You Have More Time)
If you’re extending your trip, Genoa is a great base for day trips.
Portofino (Must-Visit)
One of the most popular options is Portofino, and we’d highly recommend it. Although it’s very famous, we had never really heard of Portofino before we ventured there for a day trip from Genoa. It is absolutely beautiful and has a completely different vibe, even though it’s so close.

- Wear comfortable shoes (you’ll walk a LOT)
- Don’t rush, Genoa is best enjoyed slowly
- Try local food (especially pesto + focaccia)
