The Top 25 Activities to Add to Your Thailand Bucket List!

1. Learn to Scuba Dive

Scuba diving in Thailand must be on your bucket list!

Scuba diving has to take the number one spot on our Thailand bucket list as it is one of the most affordable countries in the world to go scuba diving! Whether you are looking to do your full PADI course or just go for a first-time taster session, Thailand is the best place to tick it off your bucket list!

We personally went scuba diving on the beautiful island of Koh Tao and Alex absolutely loved it! Check out his experience in our post where we outline our top tips for scuba diving and everything you need to know.

There are endless diving companies to choose from but we had a great experience at Assava Dive Resort. It even has its own hotel and restaurant allowing you to stay here for the duration of your course!

2. Visit the famous Maya Bay

Maya Bay is an absolute must-visit destination if you’re planning a trip to Thailand. This stunning location, situated just off the Phi Phi Islands, is truly a remote paradise on Earth. With its pristine sandy beaches and crystal-clear turquoise waters, it’s no wonder that Maya Bay is a popular tourist destination.

One of the reasons for its popularity is the fact that it was made famous by the movie The Beach. This starred the legendary Leonardo DiCaprio and Tilda Swinton. The film showcased the beauty of Maya Bay to a global audience which has caused visitors to skyrocket!

In June 2018, the Thai authorities actually closed the beach at Maya Bay as a result of overcrowding and to protect the environment. The closure actually kept getting extended to help rejuvenate to rejuvenate the newly installed coral reef and marine life. The bay was eventually re-opened in January 2022 but the authorities put strict restrictions to prevent excessive tourism. For example, individuals are only allowed to visit for up to an hour and you’re unable to swim let alone snorkel!

Nowadays, it costs 400baht to enter the Hat Nopparat Thara National Park where Maya Bay is located. The only way to go there is through a Maya Bay tour. You’ll be taken to a floating pontoon at Loh Samah Bay where you’ll then walk along a wooden pathway to Maya Bay. On the beach there are lifeguards to ensure people don’t go too far into the water, it’s very strict!

Despite its increasing popularity, Maya Bay remains a breathtakingly beautiful place that is well worth a visit. Whether you’re looking to relax on the beach or simply soak up the stunning scenery, Maya Bay has something for everyone.

3. Go to a Night Market

Night markets

Exploring the vibrant night markets is an essential activity for any trip to Thailand!

These bustling hubs of activity offer a unique cultural experience as well as some of the best street food in the world. You’ll find an endless number of stalls selling an array of food that you’ll find hard to pass up. At the Pantip Market in Koh Phangan for example, there were sushi stalls, ice cream shacks and even a smoothie stand!

You will literally find them scattered all over the country! Our favourites were the Chatuchak Weekend Market in Bangkok and the Walking Street in Pai.

4. Experience Bangkok

Many Thailand visitors might tell you to spend as little time in Bangkok as possible for various reasons. However, we had the best experience in the bustling capital city.

While it definitely isn’t the best place in Thailand to visit, you’ll likely have to pass through anyway. If that’s the case and you have a few days spare, you won’t regret exploring this crazy city. Bangkok has so much to offer in terms of shopping, activities, markets and much more. The Grand Palace is a perfect example of Bangkok’s incredible temples that are a must-visit.

The city itself is easy to get around and while a lot of it doesn’t suit the backpacker budget, there are just so many things to do and see. For example, we loved the huge shopping malls and rooftop bars!

5. Visit an Elephant Sanctuary

Seeing the elephants in Thailand has to be on your bucket list

Visiting an elephant sanctuary is undoubtedly at the top of everyone’s Thailand bucket list for several reasons. You can see these majestic creatures up close in their natural and ethical sanctuary. It also allows you to actively contribute to the conservation efforts to ensure the well-being of elephants in Thailand.

Please, please, do not visit any elephants sanctuary where they allow guests to ride the elephants! Riding elephants is not only outdated but also harmful to their physical and mental health. Any sanctuary that does allow riding is not a real ethical sanctuary!

While it isn’t the one we visited, the Elephant Nature Park seems to be the standout for ethical elephant sanctuaries in Thailand. They are recognised globally for their efforts and allow the elephants to exhibit their natural behaviours without exploiting them.

6. Go tipsy tubing!

Tubing in Northern Thailand

By far one of our favourite activities in Thailand was going Tipsy Tubing in Pai!

It’s as simple as it sounds. You float along the river Pai in an inner tube with a big group of travellers while having a couple of drinks! We have a full guide to tipsy tubing so make sure to check that out for some extra tips when taking part.

7. Experience the famous Full Moon Party!

Famous full moon party in Thailand

One of the things that many people have on their bucket lists is attending the Full Moon Party. Located on Koh Phangan, this beach party takes place once a month during the full moon and is one of the Best Nightlife Destinations in Thailand. As you can imagine, this is a major attraction for both tourists and locals alike. With its lively atmosphere and stunning beach setting, this event is definitely worth experiencing at least once in a lifetime.

8. Go rock climbing in Railay Beach

Rock climbing in Thailand

While Railay Beach wasn’t our favourite location in Thailand, one activity we particularly enjoyed was rock climbing. Situated southeast of Railay Beach itself, the Railay cliffs provide the perfect spot for rock climbing.

I’d never tried rock climbing before and it really was an experience. Until you’re hanging there struggling to grip into a tiny hole, I never truly appreciated how much strength is required. You start off with an easy route before building yourself up to something higher as exemplified in the picture. I found it hard at first to get the technique right but after a bit of practice, you know what to look for in the holes. That being said, it was a very fun activity and would highly recommend it.

Despite it being located in a remote area of Thailand, please be assured that it is all incredibly safe. Instructors are on hand to help you throughout and are connected to you to ensure you don’t hurt yourself. They themselves are all certified and have been teaching and rock climbing for a number of years. The equipment has also been thoroughly tested and wouldn’t be used if it isn’t up to standard.

There are a few different companies to choose from and we personally booked through a shop on the walking street.

9. Watch the most incredible sunsets

Thailand’s sunsets are unforgettable and capture the essence of this beautiful country. Whether you’re on picturesque Railay Beach, the tranquil shores of Koh Tao, or the stunning Phi Phi Islands, each location offers its unique charm. As the sun sets, the sky is painted with vibrant shades of orange, pink, and purple, creating a serene ambience. The gentle lapping of waves adds to the moment of pure bliss that feels like time stands still. Watching the sunset in Thailand is a cherished memory that will stay with you forever.

The best sunset we saw was by far the one on Koh Tao overlooking Sairee beach. As you can tell by the photo, it perfectly articulates the suns’ rays and was absolutely mesmerising to watch.

10. Join in the Songkran festivities

During our two-month stay in Thailand, we were fortunate enough to experience Songkran, the Thai New Year. This lively festival, held in mid-April, is a joyful celebration filled with water fights and festive revelry, marking the arrival of the hot season.

Locals and tourists alike gather on the streets, armed with water guns and buckets, engaging in a playful water battle. It’s a time of music, dancing, and laughter, as people splash water to symbolize washing away the past year’s misfortunes and welcoming a fresh start. Songkran is a cherished tradition that highlights Thailand’s lively spirit and warm hospitality.

Similarly, Loy Krathong (or Loi Krathong) is another festival that is celebrated in Thailand. This is a three-day long festival that occurs on the full moon on the 12th month of the traditional Thai lunar calendar. It’s also known as the festival of light as people come together to release lotus-shaped lanterns into the sky.

11. Visit some of the national parks

One of the standout parks is Khao Sok National Park. It has lush rainforests, dramatic limestone cliffs, and stunning Cheow Lan Lake. Exploring Khao Sok provides an opportunity to witness exotic wildlife such as gibbons and hornbills. This is on top of engaging in thrilling jungle treks and boat rides through emerald waters.

If you’re looking for an adventure, snorkelling in Thailand is a must-do experience. The clear, turquoise waters and colorful coral reefs make it a tropical paradise for exploring the underwater world. We were lucky enough to snorkel at several locations throughout the country, but our top picks were Phi Phi, Koh Tao, and Koh Samui.

These places are home to a diverse range of marine life. From vibrant tropical fish to majestic sea turtles and stunning coral formations, there’s so much to look at whilst exploring. Floating above the coral gardens and taking in all the marine wonders is an unforgettable experience that will leave you in awe of Thailand’s breathtaking aquatic treasures.

13. Island hopping

Boats in Phi Phi have to be on your Thailand bucket list!

Thailand is an island-hopping paradise! It’s filled with so many stunning locations just waiting to be explored. The best way to experience this tropical heaven is by hopping between its idyllic islands, each one more beautiful than the last.

The charming long-tail boats are a traditional and authentic way to travel the crystal-clear waters, making island hopping a breeze. You can take day trips to popular spots like James Bond Island with its dramatic limestone rock formations or Maya Bay. These trips offer an unforgettable adventure, letting you see the true beauty of Thailand’s island gems up close.

14. Get a Thai massage

Thai massage

If you’re visiting Thailand, you shouldn’t miss out on getting a Thai massage.

You can find massage shops everywhere, making it convenient and hard to resist. Thai massages are famous for their therapeutic effects, as they involve stretching, acupressure, and rhythmic movements that help relieve tension and promote relaxation.

The experienced masseuses will work on your body, leaving you feeling revitalized and completely relaxed. You can choose from a traditional massage, foot massage, or oil massage. The cultural experience is a must-do that will leave you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated after your trip to Thailand.

15. Take a Thai cooking class

Thai cooking class in Chiang Mai

If you’re planning a trip to Thailand, consider taking a Thai cooking class. It’s a great way to experience the unique flavors of Thai cuisine and connect with the local culture. By joining a cooking class at the beginning of your trip, you can learn the fundamentals of Thai cooking, meet new people, and try a variety of dishes. This will help you discover your own tastes and make it easier to choose what to eat during the rest of your travels in Thailand.

We decided to partake in a Thai cooking class in Chiang Mai and absolutely loved it. The teacher at Asia Scenic Thai Cooking Stall showed us how to make everything from scratch, including curry paste. We got to make our own spring rolls, Pad Thai and even Khao Sok! The best bit however was being taken to the local market where she showed us where to get the ingredients and what to look for. We’d very highly recommend it!

16. Get one of the world’s cheapest pints on Khaosan Road

Beer in Thailand

If you’re looking for an unforgettable experience, Khaosan Road in Thailand is the place to be. It’s a popular destination for backpackers because of its lively atmosphere, cultural immersion, and budget-friendly prices. You can grab some of the cheapest pints of beer in the world here, which makes it a great spot to socialize and unwind.

The street is always buzzing with activity, drawing a diverse crowd of backpackers from all over the world. You’ll have plenty of opportunities to make new friends and share travel stories. At night, Khaosan Road transforms into a party zone with music, street vendors, and clubs that keep the celebration going all night long. What we found fascinating was that each club and bar was pumping out different music. This meant every 10 paces you’d hear a completely different track!

17. Visit some of the country’s beautiful temples

The White Temple in Chiang Rai has to be added to your Thailand bucket list

If you’re looking for an incredible experience in Thailand, visiting the temples is a must-do! You’ll get the chance to learn about the country’s rich cultural heritage and see some truly unique architecture. Each temple has its own special vibe, and they’re all so peaceful and serene.

Some of our favourites are Wat Arun and Wat Phra Kaew in Bangkok and Wat Phra That Doi Suthep in Chiang Mai. All of which are absolutely breathtaking! And let’s not forget about the Wat Rong Khun (White Temple) or Wat Rong Suea Ten (Blue Temple) in Chiang Rai, which is known for its stunning design and intricate details. 19. Experience the floating markets

Thailand’s floating markets are captivating places to visit, showcasing the country’s unique cultural heritage. However, it’s crucial to be cautious when visiting these markets, as some tours may scam tourists.

To have an authentic experience, it’s recommended to research reputable and local markets, such as Taling Chan Floating Market, Damnoen Saduk Floating Market or Bang Nam Pheung Floating Market. These markets offer genuine experiences and are less focused on tourists. By avoiding tourist-heavy markets, you can fully immerse yourself in the lively atmosphere, interact with friendly locals, and savour authentic Thai street food.

20. Watch a Muay Thai boxing match

For centuries, Muay Thai boxing has been an integral part of Thailand’s history and culture, serving as a means of both combat and self-defence. Witnessing a Muay Thai match is an exhilarating event, with Rajadamnern and Lumpinee stadiums hosting intense battles between skilled fighters. 22. Ride a tuk tuk

While it might not sound as exciting as a lot of the other activities on this Thailand bucket list, riding a tuk-tuk or songthaew is a must-do in Thailand! Not only is it an awesome way to get around but it’s cost-effective, quicker and super fun!

From our tuk-tuk rides, we ended up making friends with the drivers who were kind enough to divulge some travel tips for the respective area. This meant we avoided activities that weren’t authentic or overcharged and allowed us to find some hidden gems like the particular restaurants in Koh Phi Phi.
