Many people will tell you to leave Bangkok as quickly as possible, but we actually loved our time in the capital city!

You can explore the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew or sample delicious street food at the famous Chatuchak Weekend Market. Many people love to party the night away at one of the many rooftop bars in the city. What’s more, Bangkok is a great base for exploring other parts of Thailand. With easy access to destinations like Ayutthaya, Kanchanaburi, and the beautiful islands in the south.

Despite its reputation for being chaotic and overwhelming, Bangkok is also a contrasting city, where traditional Thai culture meets modern convenience. Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or a curious spectator, watching a Muay Thai boxing match in Thailand is an experience like no other. You can find Muay Thai fights to watch all over the country but particularly in areas like Phuket and Koh Samui. We personally watched a fight on Railey Beach and the atmosphere was incredible!

Visitors can learn how to make traditional dishes like pad thai, green curry, and mango sticky rice, and can shop for fresh ingredients at local markets. Classes are typically hands-on and led by experienced instructors who share their knowledge of Thai cooking techniques and flavours. This activity is a fun and informative way to experience Thai culture and cuisine and is great for foodies and travellers alike.

We took part in a Thai cooking class in Chiang Mai and highly recommend the class we did, it was by far one of our favourite activities in Northern Thailand!

Waterparks 

Chiang Mai is home to several water parks, including Grand Canyon Water Park and Tube Trek Water Park. Visitors can enjoy a range of water-based activities like slides, lazy rivers, wave pools, and water sports. The parks also offer dining and entertainment options, making them a great destination for families and groups. A day spent at a water park in Chiang Mai is a fun and refreshing way to beat the heat and enjoy some outdoor fun.

13. Temples! 

Thailand is home to over 40,000 Buddhist temples, also known as “wats”, that showcase the country’s rich history and culture. 

These temples are not only places of worship but also important cultural and architectural landmarks that attract visitors from all over the world.

Some of the most famous temples in Thailand include the iconic Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha) in Bangkok, the ancient ruins of Wat Mahathat in Ayutthaya, and the stunning white temple of Wat Rong Khun in Chiang Rai.

Visiting these temples is not only a way to admire their beauty and learn about Thai history and culture but also an opportunity to experience the country’s spiritual and religious traditions firsthand. From intricate carvings and stunning architecture to peaceful gardens and serene atmospheres, Thailand’s temples are truly a sight to behold.

We took this day trip to Chiang Rai to Chiang Mai to see the most famous temples in Chiang Rai, The White Temple and The Blue Temple and would highly recommend it, we visited a lot of temples in Thailand, but having a guide made the trip so much more memorable.

14. Beautiful weather 

Thailand is famous for its beautiful weather, which makes it a popular destination for tourists from all over the world! 

It has a tropical climate, which means it is hot and humid throughout the year. The country experiences three main seasons: the cool season, the hot season, and the rainy season.

The cool season, from November to February, is the most popular time to visit Thailand. This is because the temperatures are milder, making it more comfortable for outdoor activities. The hot season, from March to May, can be very hot and dry, with temperatures reaching up to 40°C. The rainy season, from June to October, sees frequent showers and occasional floods but also provides relief from the heat.

Despite the weather, Thailand is a year-round destination with plenty to offer no matter when you visit. Whether you’re looking to soak up the sun on the beaches or trek through the mountains, there’s always something to see and do in Thailand, regardless of the season. It’s important to pack appropriate clothing and plan your activities around the weather conditions.

We personally visited in April so it was very hot, but we still really enjoyed our visit. 

15. Tuktuks and Songthaews

Songthaews and tuktuks are popular modes of transportation in Thailand, especially in busy cities like Bangkok and Chiang Mai. 

Tuktuks are small, three-wheeled vehicles that can carry up to three passengers, while Songthaews are larger trucks that can accommodate more passengers.

Tuktuks are known for their adventurous rides and bargaining culture, where passengers negotiate the fare before the journey begins. They are often used for short distances and are a fun and convenient way to get around busy areas.

Songthaews, on the other hand, operate on fixed routes and are a more affordable option for longer journeys. They are also commonly used for group travel, with passengers sharing the cost of the ride. We found that whenever we booked activities and tours like Tipsy Tubing in Pai, it was always Songthaews that were used as transportation.

While both Tuktuks and Songthaews are convenient modes of transportation in Thailand, it’s important to negotiate fares and agree on the destination before starting the journey. This will avoid any misunderstandings or overcharging which commonly happens to tourists. 

16. Wildlife

Thailand is home to a diverse range of wildlife, with many unique species that can only be found in this part of the world. This is thanks to the country’s tropical climate and dense forests which provides the perfect habitat for animals. No place epitomizes this more so than the Koh Sok National Park.

One of the most iconic animals in Thailand is the elephant. This animal has been revered for centuries and is deeply ingrained in Thai culture. Visitors to Thailand can see elephants in many different settings, from sanctuaries and elephant camps to national parks and wildlife reserves.

Thailand is also home to many other fascinating animals, including tigers, monkeys, and a wide variety of bird species. Many of these animals can be found in the country’s numerous national parks and wildlife reserves. Each offers visitors the chance to observe these creatures in their natural habitats.

However, it’s important to remember that some animals are endangered or at risk due to habitat loss and poaching. Visitors to Thailand should always respect the wildlife and their natural habitats, and avoid activities that may be harmful to the animals or their environments.

17. Traffic 

Traffic in Thailand can be chaotic, especially in busy cities like Bangkok. The roads are often crowded, with cars, buses, motorbikes, and other vehicles all vying for space on the streets. It’s not uncommon for traffic to come to a standstill during rush hour, and accidents are also a common occurrence.

However, despite the traffic, Thailand remains a popular destination for visitors from all over the world. To avoid traffic, visitors can plan their activities outside of rush hour or use alternative modes of transportation. For example in Bangkok, this includes the BTS Skytrain or MRT subway systems.

18. Cabaret Shows

Cabaret shows featuring ladyboys, also known as kathoey, are a popular form of entertainment in Thailand. These shows often feature dazzling costumes, elaborate dance routines, and lip-synced performances of popular songs. The performers are often highly skilled dancers and performers who work hard to perfect their craft.

Ladyboys have long been a part of Thai culture and society, and are widely accepted and celebrated throughout the country. Many have gone on to achieve success as performers, models, and actresses.

Visitors to Thailand can catch cabaret shows in many cities, including Bangkok, Pattaya, and Chiang Mai. These shows are a unique and colourful aspect of Thai culture. It provides an opportunity to experience the beauty and talent of these performers firsthand. However, it’s important to remember to treat these performers with respect and dignity and to avoid making any derogatory or discriminatory comments.

We visited Simon’s Cabaret during our time in Phuket and it was AMAZING! We didn’t have high expectations when we booked our tickets but it really was one of our highlights while travelling in Thailand.

19. The full moon party

The Full Moon Party is a legendary event that takes place on the island of Koh Phangan in Thailand every month. 

This all-night beach party attracts thousands of visitors from all over the world. People come to dance, drink, and socialize under the light of the full moon. The party features multiple venues with live DJs playing a wide variety of music, from electronic dance beats to reggae and hip-hop. Attendees can purchase buckets of alcohol, containing a mix of rum, coke, and energy drinks, as well as fire shows, body painting, and other fun activities.

While the Full Moon Party is a fun and exciting event, visitors should also exercise caution and be aware of their surroundings. The party can get crowded and rowdy, and incidents of theft, drug use, and other issues are not uncommon. It’s important to travel in groups and avoid engaging in risky behaviour while attending this or any other event in Thailand.

20. Beautiful sunsets

Sunsets in Thailand are breathtaking experiences that should not be missed. Whether you’re on the beach, atop a mountain, or simply enjoying a drink at a rooftop bar, the warm, golden hues of the setting sun is a sight to behold.

Thailand’s many islands and beaches are particularly popular spots for sunset watching. As the sun dips below the horizon, the sky is painted with a beautiful array of colours, from fiery oranges and reds to soft pinks and purples. Many visitors find that watching the sunset in Thailand is a serene and peaceful experience that helps to rejuvenate the spirit and connect with the natural beauty of the country.

We saw our favourite sunsets from beach restaurants in Koh Tao where we spent every evening relaxing with a cocktail and watching the sun go down.

21. Songkran 

Thailand is famous for its rich and diverse culture, and many traditional festivals are celebrated throughout the year. One of the most popular festivals is Songkran, which is the Thai New Year and is celebrated in mid-April. The festival is known for its water fights, which are a way of symbolically washing away bad luck and misfortune from the past year.

Other popular festivals in Thailand include Loy Krathong, which takes place in November and involves floating lotus-shaped baskets on rivers and canals. Similarly, the Vegetarian festival takes place in October and involves abstaining from meat and participating in a series of rituals and processions.

Visitors to Thailand during these festivals can expect to experience a vibrant and colourful celebration of Thai culture. The streets are filled with music, food, and dancing, and locals and visitors alike come together to celebrate the traditions and customs of the country. These festivals are a unique and unforgettable way to experience the warmth and hospitality of Thai culture and are a must-see for any visitor to the country.
