If you’re planning a trip to Madrid on a budget, you’re in luck; this is one of the best cities in Europe for free activities!

From stunning parks and historic plazas to world-class museums with free entry times, there are so many free things to do in Madrid that you could easily fill a few days without spending much at all.

When we visited, we were genuinely surprised by how much you can do for free. Some of my favourite moments, like wandering through Retiro Park or trying some local tapas, didn’t cost anything.

Map of Free Things to Do in Madrid

1. Explore Plaza Mayor

Start your trip at Plaza Mayor, one of the most iconic spots in Madrid.

It’s completely free to walk around, and there’s always something happening. Street performers, artists, and cafés give it a lively atmosphere.

2. Watch Sunset at the Temple of Debod

The Temple of Debod is one of the best sunset spots in the city.

It’s an ancient Egyptian temple (yes, really) with incredible views over Madrid. We went here one evening, and it ended up being one of my favourite experiences during our whole backpacking through spain trip!

3. Wander Through Retiro Park

You could easily spend hours in Retiro Park.

It’s one of the most beautiful green spaces in the city, perfect for walking, relaxing, or just escaping the busy streets. While not free, grabbing bits from a nearby supermarket for a picnic in the park is a great way to save money!

4. Visit the Crystal Palace (Palacio de Cristal)

Inside Retiro Park, you’ll find the stunning Palacio de Cristal. It’s free to enter and one of the most photogenic places in Madrid.

When people ask where to stay in Madrid, we often recommend the Retiro area, as it’s much more peaceful than other parts of the city and there are heaps of free activities nearby.

5. Walk Around the Royal Palace

The Royal Palace of Madrid is one of the must-sees in Spain.

While there’s a fee to go inside, walking around the outside and the surrounding squares is completely free.

6. Relax in Sabatini Gardens

Right next to the palace are the Sabatini Gardens.

These gardens are peaceful, well-kept, and a great place to take a break.

7. Visit Almudena Cathedral

The Almudena Cathedral is free to enter (although they do sometimes ask for a small voluntary donation) and is definitely worth a visit. The interior is surprisingly modern compared to its historic exterior.

8. Visit the Prado Museum (Free Hours)

The Prado Museum offers free entry at certain times.

It’s one of the most famous art museums in the world, so this is a great way to experience it on a budget.

It is only free for its last two hours of opening every day, so if you are looking to make a day of visiting the Prado Museum, you may want to purchase a ticket.

9. Explore Reina Sofía for Free

The Reina Sofía Museum also has free entry periods. It is best to check the Reina Sofia website for these days and times as it changes regularly.

This is where you’ll find Picasso’s Guernica, one of the most powerful artworks I’ve ever seen.

10. Visit CaixaForum Madrid

CaixaForum Madrid is known for its vertical garden outside. Even if you don’t go inside, it’s worth stopping by to see the iconic structure!

11. Visit the Rose Gardens

The rose gardens in Madrid are a quieter, lesser-known spot—perfect if you want to escape the crowds.

12. Join a Free Walking Tour

A free walking tour is one of the best ways to explore Madrid.

You’ll learn about the city’s history, culture, and hidden spots, and its a great way to get some insider info about some less touristy restaurants or activities.

We try to do a free walking tour in any new city and we joined heaps during our two months travelling europe!

It is worth noting that you are expected to leave a tip at the end of the tour, and you really should, especially if they do a good job!

13. Walk Along Gran Vía

Gran Vía is Madrid’s main shopping street. Even if you’re not buying anything, it’s fun to window shop and take in the atmosphere!

14. Look for Free Tapas

Some bars in Madrid still offer free tapas when you order a drink. It’s not guaranteed everywhere, but when you find it, it’s a great budget win. Unfortunately, if you are gluten-free in Madrid (like me), it’s unlikely you’ll receive free tapas you can actually eat, but sometimes you are lucky and get olives or nuts!

15. Walk Through Madrid Río Park

Madrid Río Park is a long green space along the river. It’s perfect for walking or cycling.

16. Explore Local Neighbourhoods

Some of the best free things to do in Madrid are simply wandering.

Areas like Malasaña and La Latina are full of character, street art, and local spots.

17. Visit El Rastro Market (Sundays)

Madrid’s famous flea market is free to browse. It’s busy, chaotic, and a great way to experience local life.

18. Visit the National Museum of Natural Sciences

The National Museum of Natural Sciences offers free entry on Tuesdays from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on Sundays from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. However, if you want to visit outside of these hours, the ticket prices are very reasonable.

19. Admire Madrid’s Architecture

From 19th-century buildings to grand plazas, Madrid is full of beautiful architecture.

Just walking around the city is an experience in itself.

20. Find the Best Views in Madrid

Some of the best views in Madrid are completely free, especially at sunset. Look for viewpoints near parks or higher areas of the city, or even better, rooftop bars!
