Cafes and Breakfast in Phi Phi

Patcheree Bakery

Patcheree Bakery quickly became one of our favourite breakfast spots on the island. In fact, we didn’t discover it until a few days into our stay, which was probably a good thing, or we might have ended up eating here every single morning.

It’s definitely a popular place with tourists so don’t be surprised if there’s a short queue for a table. The menu has a great range of Western breakfast options and they cater really well for dietary requirements. There are vegan dishes available, and they even serve amazing gluten-free pancakes.

Their full breakfasts are extremely popular, but Alex particularly enjoyed the macaroni cheese, which he claims was about 70% cheese. Safe to say it’s a pretty good option if you’re recovering from a night out.

Price: 150–300 baht
Best for: Western breakfasts, pancakes and diet-friendly options

Breakfast and Friends

PQQF+R64, Ao Nang, Mueang Krabi District, Krabi 81000

If you’re looking for a cheap breakfast in Koh Phi Phi, Breakfast and Friends is a good option.

They have a wide range of breakfast choices and while we thought the food was fairly average overall, the prices definitely make up for it and the coffee was great. It’s a good place to come if you want something simple and affordable before heading out for the day.

We even spotted someone ordering cornflakes and milk, so if you’re missing a basic breakfast from home, this might be exactly what you’re looking for.

Price: 100–200 baht
Best for: Budget breakfasts and good coffee

Charlie’s Kitchen and Bar

We had slightly mixed experiences at Charlie’s Kitchen and Bar, although this was probably down to how busy it was when we visited.

The first time we went, we were the only customers and the food was great. They serve classic breakfast dishes like full English breakfasts and avocado on toast, which can be a nice change if you’ve been eating Thai food every day.

However, when we returned later in the week it was much busier and the service struggled to keep up. If you walk past and it looks quiet, it’s definitely worth stopping in. If it looks packed, you might want to come back later.

Price: 150–300 baht
Best for: Full English breakfasts and brunch

Best Restaurants in Koh Phi Phi

Basil Bistro Bar and Restaurant

Basil Bistro is a great option if you’re looking for authentic Thai food on the island.

We came here twice during our stay and really enjoyed both visits. The curries were excellent and the dumplings were also a highlight. The restaurant has a really nice atmosphere and it’s clearly popular with visitors.

There aren’t many tables though, so it can fill up quickly. If you arrive during peak dinner time you may need to wait, but it’s definitely worth it.

Price: 200–350 baht
Best for: Thai curries and authentic local food

Madame Restro

Madame Restro is located very close to where we were staying, so we ended up walking past it quite a lot.

Eventually, I was drawn in by their chicken and avocado salad offer and it didn’t disappoint. The portion sizes were generous and the menu has a good variety of dishes.

While it wasn’t our absolute favourite restaurant on the island, it’s still a solid option and worth trying if you’re staying nearby.

Price: 150–300 baht
Best for: Casual dinners and healthy options

Garlic 1992

Garlic 1992 was probably our biggest food disappointment while we were in Phi Phi.

We had seen loads of great reviews online and several people recommended it to us. It’s known as one of the oldest restaurants on the island and is famous for its Thai food, so we were really excited to try it.

Unfortunately, we found the food quite average. That being said, the prices are very reasonable and the restaurant is always busy, so it’s possible we simply chose the wrong dishes.

Price: 120–250 baht
Best for: Cheap Thai food and classic dishes

Pirates House Restaurant & Bar

Pirates House was easily our favourite restaurant on the island.

One of the things we loved about this place is that they actually have two menus: a Western and Thai menu, and a separate Indian menu. The first time we visited, we ordered Indian food and absolutely loved it.

They also had gluten-free pasta available, which was a big win. If you have time, it’s definitely worth visiting more than once, so you can try dishes from both menus.

Pirates House actually has two locations on the island. The one we visited was in the centre of the island and seemed particularly popular with the younger crowd.

If there is one restaurant you should try while visiting Phi Phi, this is probably it.

Price: 200–400 baht
Best for: Indian food and varied menus

Cosmic

We visited Cosmic on our first night on the island, mainly because it was one of the first places we came across.

We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food and the variety on the menu. Like many restaurants in Phi Phi, they serve both Thai and Western dishes so there’s something for everyone.

The only downside is that the portion sizes were slightly smaller than expected, so if you’re really hungry you might want to order a side dish.

Price: 200–350 baht
Best for: Casual dinners with a varied menu

Best Bars in Koh Phi Phi

The Dubliner

The Dubliner is absolutely the place to be once the sun goes down.

It feels like almost everyone on the island ends up here at some point, which creates a really lively and fun atmosphere. They have a pool table, plenty of screens showing live sports and a wide range of drinks.

If you want to grab a seat, it’s definitely worth arriving earlier in the evening as it fills up quickly.

Price: 120–200 baht per drink
Best for: Nightlife and meeting other travellers

Freedom Bar

Freedom Bar quickly became one of our favourite evening spots on the island and we ended up visiting almost every night.

The bar is located right on the beachfront and they have deck chairs set up so you can relax with a drink while watching the famous fire shows on Loh Dalum Beach.

The cocktails are very reasonably priced and the atmosphere is always great.

Price: 120–180 baht per cocktail
Best for: Beachfront drinks and fire shows

Best Cheap Eats in Koh Phi Phi

Pizza Corner

Pizza Corner is almost impossible to miss as it sits right on the corner before you head down towards Loh Dalum Beach.

They sell huge pizza slices for just 80 baht and you can choose from flavours like margherita, pepperoni, chicken and vegetarian.

It’s a great place to grab a quick bite after the beach or on your way home after a night out.

Price: 80 baht per slice
Best for: Late-night cheap eats

Snow Monkey

Located opposite Pizza Corner is Snow Monkey, a fried ice cream stall that’s perfect if you have a sweet tooth.

For around 200 baht you can choose two fillings along with a base like yoghurt, chocolate or milk. It’s definitely more expensive than fried ice cream elsewhere in Thailand, but it’s still a fun treat while visiting Phi Phi.

Price: 200 baht
Best for: Desserts and sweet treats

Sushi Shack

We ended up calling this place the Sushi Shack because the actual name is written in Thai and we couldn’t translate it.

The stall sells sushi rolls individually rather than in sets, with each piece costing around 10–15 baht. If you buy ten pieces they’ll usually throw in an extra roll as well.

Unfortunately we didn’t get around to trying it (I was too busy eating pizza), but the sushi looked very tempting.

Price: 10–15 baht per piece
Best for: Cheap sushi snacks

Tips for Eating in Koh Phi Phi

  • Many restaurants are cash only, so it’s worth carrying some baht with you.
  • Popular restaurants can fill up quickly during the evening.
  • Most places serve both Thai and Western food.
  • Street food stalls are great if you’re looking for cheap meals.

Gluten Free Food in Koh Phi Phi

As a coeliac, finding safe places to eat while travelling is always something I have to think about, but I was pleasantly surprised by the number of gluten-free options in Koh Phi Phi. While many traditional Thai dishes are naturally gluten free, it’s still important to check ingredients as soy sauce is commonly used and often contains wheat.

During our stay, a couple of places stood out for gluten-free options. Patcheree Bakery even offered gluten-free pancakes, which were amazing and a rare treat while travelling. Pirates House was another great find as they had gluten-free pasta available on their Western menu. Many restaurants on the island also cook dishes fresh to order, so it’s usually possible to ask for small changes to make meals gluten free.

As always when travelling with coeliac disease, it’s worth explaining your dietary requirements clearly and double checking ingredients, but overall we found eating gluten free in Koh Phi Phi to be much easier than expected.
