We almost made the mistake of not spending much time on Gili Trawangan.
Like many people planning an Indonesia itinerary, we’d heard mixed opinions before arriving. Some travellers described it as nothing more than a backpacker party island, while others claimed it was the highlight of their entire trip.
Originally, we’d only booked a few nights. After all, we were travelling around Bali and had plenty of other places we wanted to see.
Fast forward a few days, and we found ourselves extending our stay… then extending it again.
In the end, we spent nearly two weeks on Gili Trawangan, making it one of the places we stayed the longest during our two months in Indonesia. We quickly realised there was so much more to the island than its reputation for nightlife.
From cycling around the island and watching unforgettable sunsets to snorkelling with turtles and discovering some of our favourite restaurants of the whole trip, Gili T completely won us over.

Despite being known as the “party island” of the three Gili Islands, we found it offered the perfect balance of beautiful beaches, incredible snorkelling, fantastic food, lively nightlife and plenty of opportunities to relax.
We originally planned to stay for just a few days but ended up extending our trip to nearly two weeks because we simply weren’t ready to leave.
If you’re looking for an island with crystal-clear water, no cars, stunning sunsets and loads of things to do, we think Gili Trawangan deserves a place on your Indonesia itinerary.
Why We Loved Gili Trawangan
There are plenty of beautiful islands across Indonesia, but there was something about Gili Trawangan that kept drawing us back. These were the biggest reasons we ended up staying far longer than we’d planned.
The Best Sunsets We’ve Ever Seen
We’ve watched sunsets in a lot of places, but Gili Trawangan is still right up there with our favourites.
Almost every evening we’d cycle over to the west coast, grab a drink from one of the beach bars and watch the sun disappear behind Bali and Mount Agung. The atmosphere was hard to beat, with live music, bean bags on the sand and people gathering to watch the sky turn shades of orange, pink and purple.
Unlike many destinations where sunsets feel rushed, evenings on Gili T encouraged you to slow down. Nobody seemed to be in a hurry, and it became one of our favourite daily rituals.
The Food Was So Much Better Than We Expected
One of the biggest surprises was just how good the food was.
For such a small island, Gili Trawangan has an incredible restaurant scene. Whether we fancied Indonesian food, Italian, Mexican or something a little different, there always seemed to be another great place to try.
In fact, we loved Jali Kitchen so much that we went back three times during our stay, which probably tells you everything you need to know.

It Was So Peaceful Without Any Cars or Motorbikes
One of the first things you’ll notice when you arrive is that there are no cars or motorbikes on Gili Trawangan.
Instead, everyone gets around on foot, by bicycle or by horse-drawn cart.
We absolutely loved hiring bikes and exploring the island at our own pace. It only takes around an hour to cycle all the way around, but we often spent much longer stopping at beaches, cafés and viewpoints along the way.
The lack of traffic creates such a relaxed atmosphere and is one of the biggest reasons the island feels so different from mainland Bali.
Affordable Accommodation for Every Budget
Another thing that surprised us was how many accommodation options there were.
Whether you’re looking for a lively backpacker hostel, a boutique hotel or a luxury beachfront resort, there’s something to suit almost every budget.
During our stay, we actually stayed in three different places before eventually settling into our favourite, My Gili Paradise, where we ended up extending our stay.

It Has the Perfect Mix of Relaxation and Nightlife
Before visiting, we’d heard Gili Trawangan described as the “party island” of the three Gili Islands. While that’s partly true, we actually think the nightlife is only as big a part of your trip as you want it to be.
If you’re looking to party, you’ll find beach bars, live music, pub crawls and plenty of places that stay open late into the night, particularly around the east coast near the harbour.
But if, like us, you’d sometimes rather spend your evenings enjoying a good meal before watching the sunset, that’s just as easy to do.
Most of our nights were spent trying a different restaurant, wandering along the beachfront with an ice cream or finding a quiet spot to watch the sun go down. We only dipped into the nightlife occasionally, yet we never once felt like we were missing out.
It’s one of the few places we’ve visited that genuinely caters to both backpackers wanting to socialise and couples looking for a more relaxed island escape.
Incredible Snorkelling and Scuba Diving
If you enjoy spending time in the water, Gili Trawangan is hard to beat.
The island is surrounded by crystal-clear water that’s home to colourful coral reefs, tropical fish and, if you’re lucky, plenty of sea turtles. In fact, we saw turtles multiple times during our stay, both while snorkelling and even from the beach, which was such an unexpected bonus.
One of the most popular activities is taking a snorkelling tour around all three Gili Islands, where you’ll usually visit Gili Meno and Gili Air as well. We thought this was a brilliant way to see more of the area without having to change accommodation.
If you’re already a certified diver, there are also plenty of dive centres offering fun dives around the islands. We actually completed our Open Water course in Thailand before arriving, so this time we stuck to snorkelling, but Gili Trawangan is well known as one of the best places in Indonesia to go scuba diving.
Beautiful Beaches and Relaxed Beach Clubs
Although Gili Trawangan isn’t one endless stretch of white sand, we still thought the beaches were one of its biggest highlights.
Each side of the island has its own character. The east coast is busier with restaurants and arriving boats, the north is quieter with some of the clearest water, while the west coast quickly became our favourite thanks to its beach bars and incredible sunsets.
One thing we particularly loved was how easy it was to spend an afternoon relaxing by the sea. Many beachfront bars and resorts allow non-guests to use their sun loungers or beach beds as long as you buy a drink or two, making it an affordable way to enjoy some of the island’s best spots.

We Kept Extending Our Stay
Perhaps the biggest sign that Gili Trawangan is worth visiting is the fact that we simply didn’t want to leave.
We’d originally booked just a few nights before continuing our trip around Indonesia, but every time our checkout date came around, we found ourselves extending our stay again.
There wasn’t one single reason why.
It was the combination of everything: cycling around the island with no real plan, discovering another great restaurant, watching another incredible sunset, snorkelling with turtles or simply slowing down for a while.
Sometimes you visit a place because there’s loads to do. Other times, you visit somewhere that just makes you feel relaxed and happy.
For us, Gili Trawangan was definitely the latter, and it’s still one of the places we look back on most fondly from our travels.
Things We Didn’t Love About Gili Trawangan
As much as we loved Gili Trawangan, no destination is perfect. These weren’t dealbreakers for us, but they’re definitely worth knowing before you book your trip.
The Fast Boat from Bali Can Be Rough
If you’re travelling from Bali, the journey to Gili Trawangan is probably the least enjoyable part of the trip.
The crossing can be quite rough depending on the weather, and unfortunately, ours wasn’t the smoothest. We were bounced around quite a bit, and quite a few people onboard were feeling seasick by the end of the journey.
That said, once we arrived, we quickly forgot about the boat ride.

It’s More Expensive Than Mainland Bali
Compared to mainland Bali, you’ll probably notice prices are slightly higher across the island.
This makes sense when you consider that almost everything has to be transported over by boat.
Accommodation, restaurants and tours are generally a little more expensive than places like Canggu or Ubud, although we still thought Gili Trawangan offered excellent value for money.
We were actually surprised by how affordable many of our favourite restaurants were, especially considering the quality of the food.
It Can Be Busy Around the Harbour
The east coast around the harbour is by far the busiest part of the island.
This is where the fast boats arrive, most of the restaurants are located and where many people choose to stay. During the middle of the day, it can feel quite hectic compared to the rest of the island.
Fortunately, this only covers a relatively small area.
Cycle just ten minutes north or south, and everything becomes much quieter. We actually loved being able to enjoy the lively atmosphere when we wanted it before escaping to the more peaceful parts of the island.
Some Beaches Are Better Than Others
One thing that surprised us was how different each side of the island felt.
If you’re expecting perfect white sand all the way around Gili Trawangan, you might be slightly disappointed.
The east coast has lots of boats and beachfront restaurants, while parts of the north can be a little rockier, although the water there is incredibly clear.
Personally, we found ourselves spending most evenings on the west coast, where the beaches felt much more relaxed and the sunsets were unforgettable.
We Felt Sad Seeing the Horse-Drawn Carts
One thing we couldn’t ignore during our stay was the use of horse-drawn carts, known locally as cidomos.
Because there are no cars or motorbikes on Gili Trawangan, these carts are still used to transport luggage and visitors around the island.
While some horses appeared healthy and well cared for, we also saw others working or just standing out in the sun during the hottest parts of the day, which was difficult to see.
We chose to walk or hire bicycles instead. Not only is the island small enough to explore on your own, but cycling also became one of our favourite parts of visiting Gili Trawangan.
It’s worth being aware of this before you visit so you can decide how you’d prefer to get around the island.
Who Should Visit Gili Trawangan?
Although we think Gili Trawangan is one of the best places to visit in Indonesia, it won’t be the perfect fit for everyone. Here’s who we think will get the most out of staying on the island.
Backpackers
If you’re backpacking around South East Asia, Gili Trawangan is an easy recommendation.
The island has loads of sociable hostels, beach bars and organised activities, making it incredibly easy to meet other travellers. Whether you’re joining a snorkelling trip, heading out on a pub crawl or simply relaxing by the hostel pool, there’s always something going on.
Despite its reputation as a party island, you definitely don’t have to drink to enjoy it. We met plenty of backpackers who were there purely for the beaches, diving and relaxed atmosphere.
Couples
We honestly think Gili Trawangan would make an amazing couples’ destination.
Whether you’re visiting as part of a longer Indonesia trip or even on your honeymoon, there are so many romantic things to do. Think beachfront dinners, sunset walks, cycling around the island together and snorkelling with turtles.
One of our favourite afternoons was taking part in a jewellery making class in Gili Trawangan, where we each made our own silver rings to take home. It ended up being one of the most memorable experiences of our entire trip and is something we’d highly recommend if you’re travelling as a couple.
Solo Travellers
Gili Trawangan is also one of the easiest places we’ve visited to meet people.
There are plenty of hostels, group snorkelling tours and social bars, so even if you’re travelling alone, you won’t stay that way for long unless you want to.
The island feels very safe; it’s easy to get around on foot or by bike and most people are there for the same reason, to relax and enjoy island life.
Families
Families can absolutely enjoy Gili Trawangan, but it probably wouldn’t be our first recommendation.
While the beaches are beautiful and there are lots of family-friendly restaurants, some areas around the harbour can get quite busy, especially during peak season.
We’d also bear in mind that the paths around parts of the island can be uneven, making them a little tricky if you’re travelling with a pushchair.
If you’re looking for somewhere quieter and more relaxed, Gili Air or Gili Meno may be a better choice.
Divers and Snorkellers
If you love being in the water, Gili Trawangan is definitely worth visiting.
The island is famous for its sea turtles, colourful coral reefs and clear water, making it one of the best places in Indonesia for both snorkelling and scuba diving.
Even if you’re not a certified diver, there are plenty of snorkelling tours that take you to some of the best spots around all three Gili Islands.
If you already have your scuba certification, you’ll find plenty of dive centres offering fun dives around Gili Trawangan, Gili Air and Gili Meno.
Who Might Prefer Gili Air or Gili Meno?
If you’re deciding between the three Gili Islands, here’s a quick comparison based on our research and experience.

For us, Gili Trawangan offered the best all-round experience.
It had enough going on that we were never bored, but it never felt overwhelmingly busy once we ventured away from the harbour. We also loved being able to take day trips to Gili Air and Gili Meno while keeping Gili T as our base, giving us the best of all three islands.
Is Gili Trawangan Expensive?
Compared to mainland Bali, Gili Trawangan is slightly more expensive, but we still thought it offered fantastic value for money.
Because everything has to be brought over by boat from Bali or Lombok, you’ll generally pay a little more for accommodation, food and activities. That said, we never felt like the island was overpriced, especially considering the quality of what we got.

One thing we particularly liked was that there were options for every budget. You could happily grab an affordable meal from a local warung one evening before treating yourself to a beachfront dinner the next.
Accommodation was much the same. During our stay, we tried three different places before eventually settling into our favourite guesthouse, proving you don’t have to spend a fortune to have an amazing stay.
Our Favourite Experiences on Gili Trawangan
There are plenty of things to do on Gili Trawangan, but these are the experiences that still stand out whenever we think back to our trip.
Making Our Own Silver Rings
One of the biggest surprises of our stay was taking part in a jewellery-making class.
We hadn’t planned on doing it at all, but after walking past the workshop one afternoon, we decided to book a class for the following day. A few hours later, we walked away wearing silver rings that we’d made ourselves.
It ended up being one of the most memorable afternoons of our trip and is something we’d recommend to anyone looking for a unique activity away from the beach.
Watching the Sunset Every Evening
It might sound simple, but watching the sunset quickly became part of our daily routine.
Most evenings we’d cycle over to the west coast, find a beach bar, order a drink and watch the sky light up behind Bali. Every sunset seemed to be different, and somehow we never got tired of it.
If you’re only in Gili Trawangan for a few days, we’d make this a non-negotiable.
Watching a Film at the Outdoor Cinema
One of the more unusual evenings we spent on the island was at the beachfront outdoor cinema.
There’s something pretty special about sitting on bean bags under the stars with the sound of the waves in the background while watching a film.
It’s such a simple idea, but it ended up being one of our favourite things to do on Gili Trawangan.

Before visiting Gili Trawangan, we weren’t quite sure what to expect.
We’d heard plenty about its nightlife, but very little about everything else the island had to offer. Looking back, we’re so glad we didn’t let that reputation put us off.
What we found instead was a beautiful island with some of the best sunsets we’ve ever seen, fantastic restaurants, crystal-clear water and a relaxed atmosphere that made it incredibly easy to switch off.
The biggest compliment we can give Gili Trawangan is that we simply couldn’t bring ourselves to leave. What started as a short stop during our Indonesia trip turned into nearly two weeks, with us extending our stay more than once because we loved it so much.
