New Year’s Eve is one of the busiest travel periods in Europe, so planning is essential. Accommodation in popular cities often books up months in advance, especially for central locations near major celebrations.

The biggest New Year event in Barcelona is the fireworks display on Avinguda Maria Cristina, next to Plaça Espanya. The fireworks begin at around 11.45 pm, but before that, there are other performances including the Magic Fountain musical display.
If you don’t make it here, then head to the beach or to a rooftop terrace so you can watch the fireworks from there.
One Spanish tradition that you mustn’t forget is to eat 12 grapes at each chime of midnight, and have a glass of cava to celebrate. People also gather at Plaça Catalunya to see in the New Year. They then throw their bottles of cava into the middle of the square. It is fun to watch, but not everyone’s aim is accurate, so watch out for flying bottles!

On New Year’s Eve, there are countless events and activities in London. Attend a party at the O2 Arena, take an Uber boat around and look at the London skyline, or celebrate by ascending in the London Eye.
The most famous event is, of course, the London fireworks. These take place every year, and they illuminate the sky!
The London Eye turns into a giant Catherine Wheel, and the entire skyline looks like a work of art. The fireworks are a ticketed event, and you can usually purchase your tickets from October onwards. It’s recommended to buy them quickly if you’d like the chance to see these beautiful illuminations up close!

What a great list. I think London is probably where you’ll get the best NYE experience of them all. The lights, festive mood and atmosphere are just truly electric! One place I’d like to experience though would be Berlin, with all the Christmas decorations and lights.

Spending the holidays in Europe would be so special! I’d probably aim for a warmer destination, like Barcelona, than a colder one! So many great options in Europe, for sure.
There really are so many great destinations to pick from in Europe you choose whatever suits you. I can only imagine Barca is amazing during Christmas.

Funny that I’m originally from Hungary but I’ve never celebrated NYE in Budapest. Since I’m based in the UK, I went to London for NYE a few years ago and it was a lot of fun. Would love to try other cities in the future.

There are so many great places to spend New Years Eve in Europe – So far I’ve done London, Stockholm and the Austrian Alps. Will be Sydney, Australia this year!

I’ve lived in Berlin and England several times and have always wanted to experience New Years in London. But I haven’t been brave enough to do it due to the cost and crowds.

I must admit we are pretty much party poopers when it comes to New Years Eve. Although one year we went to Dubai specifically for the fireworks that night. But this is a great list of places we should consider for winter travel.
