Trying to decide where to stay in Barcelona? This is one of those cities where your choice of neighbourhood really shapes your trip.
Barcelona is made up of distinct areas (or barrios), each with its own vibe; some are perfect for first-time visitors, others are better for nightlife, beaches, or a more local experience. When we visited Barcelona for 5 days in October, I quickly realised how different each area feels depending on where you stay.
We stayed at Yeah Hostel, which had a great social atmosphere, but we also spent time exploring lots of different neighbourhoods, from the historic streets of the old city to the beachy vibe near Barceloneta Beach.

If it’s your first time in Barcelona, I’d recommend staying in or near the Gothic Quarter or Eixample.
You’ll be within walking distance of:

- La Rambla

It’s the easiest option if you only have a few days in Barcelona and want a central location with easy access to everything.
Gothic Quarter: Best Area for First-Time Visitors & History
The Gothic Quarter is the heart of the old city, and one of the most popular places to stay in Barcelona.
Walking through this area feels like stepping back in time. Narrow streets, hidden squares, and historic buildings give it a really unique atmosphere. It’s also incredibly central, making it ideal if you want everything within a short walk.
You’ll be close to both Barcelona Cathedral and La Rambla.
The vibe of the accommodation options in the Gothic Quarter tends to be boutique hotels tucked into historic buildings and smaller hotels with lots of character.

El Born quickly became one of my favourite areas in Barcelona.
It has a really nice balance, central but less hectic than the Gothic Quarter. You’ll find loads of tapas bars, boutique shops, and a more relaxed atmosphere.
While right next door to the Gothic Quarter, El Born is ideal if you want something a bit more polished but still central, think boutique hotels and stylish apartments.

Eixample is one of the best areas to stay in Barcelona overall.
It’s known for its wide streets, beautiful buildings, and grid layout, which makes it much easier to navigate compared to the old city.
This is where you’ll find both Casa Batlló and Casa Milà. Eixample is one of the more popular areas in Barcelona to base your stay, it has a great mix of Modern hotels, mid-range and luxury options and chain hotels, a great all-round choice.

We spent quite a bit of time around here, and it’s such a different vibe compared to the city centre—more relaxed, more casual.
If you are looking for more of a beachy vacation out of your Barcelona trip, you might want to opt for staying in the Barceloneta area, expect beachfront stays and apartments with a seaview, including luxury options like the famous W Hotel.

Poble Sec is a great option if you’re travelling Europe on a budget.
It has a more local feel, with fewer tourists and lots of authentic tapas bars.
Poble Sec is a bit of a trendier area of Barcelona, popular with students and backpackers and where you’ll find a lot of hostels, some of the best hostels in Europe, actually! It’s a bit further out from the main attractions than the other areas, but for that reason, you can find some great budget hotels.
