How long to stay in Tamarindo as a backpacker
As a backpacker visiting Tamarindo, it is recommended to stay for at least four or five days to fully experience its vibrant beach culture and exciting activities. This will give you time to explore the stunning beaches, try surfing, indulge in local cuisine, and immerse yourself in the lively nightlife.
We ended up staying in Tamarindo for 5 days at the end of our trip backpacking Panama and Costa Rica before leaving from Liberia International Airport.
When to visit Tamarindo
The best time of year is to visit between December and March. This allows you to miss the rainy season as well as the hottest time of the dry season in April. Whilst prices may be slightly higher as a result, you’re bound to have a much better experience than you would visiting any other time of the year!
You can visit all year round but you might need to alter what you need to pack for Costa Rica to include some rain ponchos if you are visiting in the green season!
How to get to Tamarindo on a budget
To get around Costa Rica, we always used a mixture of public buses and shuttle buses, either booked through our hostels or online using websites like 12Go and Caribe shuttles.

From Liberia International Airport
Firstly, consider taking a shared shuttle or public bus instead of a private taxi. Shared shuttles are often more affordable and can drop you off directly in Tamarindo. Public buses are the most economical option, but they might involve transfers and longer travel times.
If you prefer a more adventurous journey, you can take a combination of public buses and taxis. Catch a local bus from the airport to Liberia city centre, and then transfer to another bus heading towards Tamarindo. Once you reach a nearby town called Huacas, take a taxi or local bus to Tamarindo.
Remember, while travelling on a budget, it’s essential to plan ahead, compare prices, and be flexible with your transportation options.
From San Jose
The quickest way is to take a direct domestic flight from San Jose to Tamarindo Airport. However, if you’re on a budget, you can opt for a combination of public buses and taxis.
Alternatively, from the airport, take a taxi or bus to the San Jose bus terminal, and then board a bus heading to Tamarindo. The journey takes around 4-5 hours. Another option is renting a car from the airport and driving to Tamarindo. This allows for more flexibility in exploring the area and taking in the beautiful Costa Rican landscape. Do make sure to plan your trip ahead and consider factors like travel time, cost, and personal preference.

El Mercardito de Tamarindo

We ended up stumbling across this local food court as it’s slightly tucked away but we were so glad we did. It’s a similar concept to Tamarindo Food Court below but a more established concept and produces better quality food. You can find everything from dirty burgers to pizza to Asian cuisine under one roof so no one you’re with will be left unhappy! There are tons of places to grab a seat and we loved it being open-air which made it more enjoyable to sit at. Every evening a band plays making it a great place to relax with a cold beer or cocktail in hand.

The menu was perfect for breakfast, brunch or lunch, whichever time of day you decide to eat.
